Tocantins is a new born state. Its landscapes, rivers, fauna and flora are of exotic and exuberant beauty, favorable for the adventure, fishing and ecological camps.

ISLAND OF THE BANANAL

Golden point of this paradise, the Island of the Bananal is the largest river island in the world. It is an environmental reserve since 1959, with an area of 2.000.001 ha. Its territory belongs integrally to the State of Tocantins, making boundary with the states of the Para, Mato Grosso and Goiás. Formed among the rivers Araguaia (West) and Javaés (East), it is an ecological sanctuary of rare scenic beauty, containing exuberant fauna and flora with countless species of wild animals. It is full with lakes, igapós, streams and rivers, surrounded by virgin forests. In rainy station (September to March), approximately 80% of the territory of the Island is flooded, forming beautiful swamplands. In the South of the island there is the Indigenous Park of Araguaia, with 1.437.689 ha, administered by the National indian Foundation (FUNAI), which was created to protect the Indians Javaés and Carajás, that there inhabit. In the North of the Island there is the National Park of Araguaia, that originally embraced the whole Island. The fauna of the Island of the Bananal has great similarity with the one of the Mato Grosso swampland.

A true oasis in the Savannah, this area is formed by mountains, plains and hills, with hide caves and exotic formations; rivers of crystalline waters, with paradisiacal beaches and voluminous waterfalls; fields filled flowers and wild. Jalapão mixes dunes of white sands amid the Savannah and it invites the adventurers and lovers of the nature to the practice of the ecological tourism.

Area formed by the mountains of Carmo and Lajeado, the East, and the river Tocantins, to West. Its vegetation and predominant soil are the savannah, where toucans live, macaws, parrots, parakeets and others wild animals. Its mountains and the Tocantins river enchant the lovers of the nature with waterfalls and beaches. The municipal districts that compose it are Palmas, Lajeado, Miracema do Tocantins, Monte do Carmo, Porto Nacional.

Beaches

In this area it happens the transition of the forest of the Savannah to the Amazon Forest. It is among the rivers Araguaia. to West. and Tocantins, the East, that presents beautiful beaches and vegetation. populated by birds and wildness. This area is composed by the municipal districts of Araguaína. Araguanã, Araguatins, Tocantinópolis and Xambioá.

TOURIST AREA OF THE LAKES

Lakes

Area with beautiful beaches by the margins of the river Araguaia, and of exuberant nature, being its flora formed by the transition between the Savannah and the Amazon Forest. The fauna possesses a big variety of wild animals and birds. Good for fishing, nautical sports and ecological trails by the forests. Its municipal districts are Araguacema, Formoso do Araguaia, Caseara e Lagoa da Confusão.

Termas e Gerais

Mountainous area, of mountains and hills with countless rivers of crystalline waters, with falls of rare beauty. Historically, due to its auriferous potential, it was colonized by paulistas goldminers known as Bandeiras (flaggers), adventurers and religious missionaries, that there founded several cities. The catechesis of Indians and the use of the slave labor characterized its colonization. Besides the beauty of its nature, its cities have considerable historical value. The municipal districts that compose it are Arraias, Dianópolis, Gurupi, Jaú do Tocantins, Lizarda, Natividade, Paranã, Peixe, Ponte Alta do Tocantins, São Valério and Taguatinga do Tocantins.
